While searching for Diane I came across Samuel. He was interested in an interview. I don't feel as intrigued by him as much as I do Diane but I found the experience beneficial. I am not purely interested in Diane because she is homeless. Its her mind I want to get to know. The idea of making documentaries is something I want to explore more. I am hopeful I can be creative with Diane if I find her. Maybe be her medium for getting her thoughts down on paper.

During the course of the rest of the semester I would like to push the idea of social realism to a further level. I want to create a modern portrait of a woman I met on Myrtle Avenue. This woman claims to be homeless and has opinions I find intriguing. I know very little about her at this point but I am very keen to find out more and then create works from the knowledge and inspiration she gives me.

Her name is ‘Diane’ but is known to the community as ‘D’. She grew up in the neighbourhood and has an interest in the creative arts. I hope to have made a short documentary style film on ‘Diane’ by the end of term that will involve interviews, observation and sound. Alongside this I may find myself helping her get her own opinions and artistic expression recorded in a range of different media. I plan on using text, traditional drawing, photography, sound and film to create Diane’s portrait. This may involve collaboration between Diane and I to make works.

I find the concept of working with Diane imperative to my way of working and thinking. This is, of course, due to my interests in social realism and existentialism. But also, more importantly, the fact that she comes from a completely different background from me. Diane lives a life that very little people choose to do in our society. It could be considered that she lives in an abstract reality to the norm. I find this an enthralling artistic concept, and the fact that she comes from this background may cause her to have expressions, opinions that are completely unique.

Inspired by two Irvine Welsh characters from the books, 'Filth' and 'Crime': Bruce Robertson and Ray Lennox. Both being two characters with a dark background involving child abuse. In Ray's case it was sexual abuse. Bruce commits suicide due to a long chain of events which results in a psychotic state of self reflection. His tapeworm reveals to the reader his horrific up-bringing which explains his misanthropic and disgusting side to his personality. The audio in the video is me reciting a poem I wrote for Lennox and Bruce. It is distorted to give a darker vibe. The music is Aphex Twin.

Goin tae the gym

What dae a think aboot goin to the gym?? Well ae guess am a bit indifferent aboot the whole thing eh. Different wants for different people ken. There’s been different reasons for each time I’ve ‘started’ goin to the gym. If you catch ma drift likes. But for me it started aff aboot getting bigger eh. Beein a small cunt n that. Wantin tae build ma strength up, get bigger n impress the birds ken. So a started liftin a cheeky weight here n there. Even thought aboot goin on that protein pish eh, gain muscle strength sharpish but a thought against it in the end. So picture the scene pal, heres me: wee man walkin intae the fuckin gym ready tae get started on some heavy duty weight liftin. Fuckin barry eh. Of course a walk straight intae a fuckin macho fest ken. Massive cunts left right and centre pure accentuatin their masculinity ken. Testorone hangin in the air like a wet rag man. Nae ma scene man, nae ma scene! Am not one of those competitive types ken so a just left it that eh. For the time bein likes.
A couple years later a I started getting stressed man. Anxiety, paranoia an all that shite ken. Whatever it wis it wis fuckin horrible. Pure brutal likes. An a wisnae gonnae go on any on tha medication pish il tell ya that fer nowt. Dinna believe in it eh unless absolutely necessary ken. Dinna get me wrong pal, if a gadge is proper on the edge likes, then maybe medication is the answer eh but nae for me. I needed tae release sum of these bad vibes by exercising. So that was that. I was back doon the gym for a different reason this time: tae try n concentrate ma mind on other hings. The only hing that really helped me was the sauna ae cuz all I could dae was concentrate on the mad heat ken. Sort ae meditation fer the heed. I stopped goin after a while tho eh after ma heed calmed doon a bit. Could dae wi going back tho. We’ll see tho gadge. We’ll see.

American Suburbia - showing the light and dark side to this world, sense of mystery

Interesting camera shots - alternating during scenes e.g shot of trees while Jeffery and Sandy are walking creates dark and eerie atmosphere

Very strange and surreal script - 'biggest tongue in the world", "Do you know the chicken walk?"

Jeffery has a dark and introverted side to his personality. Is he being genuine to Sandy? Is he manipulating her thus sexually dominating her? Does she find this sexually arousing?

Soundtrack- Soft eerie wind sounds juxtaposed with up-beat jazz (walking bass) - Dark and Light

After Jeffery sees dorothy his intentions are different from the beginning. He finds her sexually desirable. Does he use the 'mystery' as an excuse to see her.

Is there a difference? He becomes the voyeur while in the apartment. Makes me think of Hitchcock's Psycho. Bates peering through the hole in the wall to watch Marion undress.

Dorothy is sexually dominated by Frank thus she dominates Jeffery (at the beginning) using terms she has learnt from Frank such as, "Don't look at me."

Shots of Jeffery peering from the cupboard are very effective. He seems almost psychopathic. He is enjoying being the voyeur.

Dorothy is sexually confused due to abuse. Has she developed to enjoy this abuse? Did she enjoy it from the start? Do we enjoy the things we know are 'wrong'?

The danger may be sexually arousing to the participants whether they are the abused or not.

Frank is an extremist. He is acting out and performing his instinctive sexual desires. He is psychopathic thus lacking the impulse to repress his desires.

Does Dorothy enjoy Frank's torture?

The psychology of the abused and the abuser are closer than they appear in my opinion. They have become similar psychologically. They are two extremes of the sexual being.

Jeffery refrains from telling Sandy the whole story and doesn't want to tell the police due to his desire for Dorothy.

Sandy's dream of the robins may be representative of the whole story. The world can be very dark at times but there would be no light without the dark.

Filmed the first week of the christmas holidays, I think unconsciously inspired by Chris Welsby's video work as he is concerned with landscape. This could be considered a personal work and in a sense a self portrait as this is the view from my bedroom window, of course a very personal space. The soundtack is taken from the introduction to the moving piece symphony no.3 by Henryk Gorecki. I cut this introduction from the original piece and slowed it down. This cut is repeated three times throughout the film. It creates an ambient sound, sometimes eerie but sometimes emotional. The visual is a slow pan down and then zoom out. This is a simple technique but I think it works well.

Inspired by a previous film I made called 'This is a sculpture'. Carries on the same idea and feel but this time adding a soundtrack I think fits quite effectively. Aphex Twin's ambient track, 'Rhubarb' was used. I edited the track simply by slowing it down causing the tone to lower. It may produce emotional effects for the viewer. it does for me. The film may also have a comical aspect, this is unintensional but relevent. Some dialogue is quite sarcastic but with a serious undertone. The film is not scripted and is spontaneous. The visual is slowed down as well coinciding well with the background music. This video questions or merely states that the term sculpture has no absolute definition in our present day and it plays with what we consider to be art in general, also saying that everything is art or could be considered art. This is a positive for me because i feel everyday life is art in its purest form. The film may also bring up the discussion on what do we consider an artist to be? What makes an artist an artist? Can the regular man or woman on the street be the artist? Are they the real artists?

In November 1996, she presented a show Second Class Male, Second Class Female, which was of two reconstructed heads.
In 1997, for her first solo show in London, L'Homme Double at the Lisson Gallery, she commissioned 6 academically-trained sculptors to make life-size clay heads of the Nazi Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele from photocopied pictures of him which she provided and descriptions which Auschwitz survivors had made.

In 1997 she was a nominee for the "all women" Turner Prize, which was won by Gillian Wearing. The art works that Borland exhibited included The Dead Teach the Living (1997), originally displayed at the 1997 Munster Sculpture Project in Germany, was a group of computer-reconstructed heads cast in white plaster that show different racial stereotypes. After a True Story—Giant and Fairy Tales (1997) showed a negative impression of the skeletal remains of an 18th century dwarf and contrasted them with a 19th century giant. Phantom Twins (1997), consisted of leather "dolls" containing real foetal skeletons. Her work From Life was a record of her forensic reconstruction of a missing Asian woman. This started with a skeleton and concluded with a bronze cast of the head. The concern of the artist was with issues of depersonalisation of the individual that take place with medical establishments. Her rebuilding of a missing person was a process of re-personalisation.
Solo exhibitions include the Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia), Dundee Contemporary Arts, De Appel (Amsterdam), Fundação Serralves (Lisbon) and Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich)."
